Soil

A journaling app that only lets you write if you haven't opened social media in the last two hours.

Work Narrative

Q

How did you come up with this project?

A

I used to write in my journal every morning. Then I started scrolling Twitter before writing. My journal turned into a reaction to other people's opinions. So, I built myself a lock.

Q

How often do you use this product yourself?

A

Most user feedback indicates that when they stay away from social media for more than 2 hours, their journal entries are three times longer than usual.

Manifesto

How it works

Soil uses the Screen Time API (iOS) and Digital Wellbeing (Android) to check if you have opened any apps on your blocklist within the last 2 hours. If you have, the journal interface will display a gentle "Not yet" countdown.

A blank page is not a problem to be solved, but a space to be protected.
